Chapter Five

Charlotte came to her senses in a room scented with pine, clothed only in a thin oversized t-shirt and her underwear, a crisp cotton sheet and a beautifully made log-cabin quilt draped over her body in the middle of a gigantic, comfortable bed. Rays of early morning light shafted through a clear glass window to her left, highlighting the deep green walls of the obviously masculine room. She sat up, holding the quilt to her chest, about to call out, when Pike appeared at the threshold of the door.

Wearing clean blue jeans and a plaid cotton shirt left unbuttoned to the waist, sleeves rolled to the elbow, his hair was still damp from the shower. He was holding a tall glass of water in one hand, which he set down on the small table beside the headboard before stepping back a few paces to give her some space. Feeling shy, and somewhat out of place in the masculine surroundings of what had to be Pike’s own home, she still needed something for the parched feeling in her throat. So, she drank the water, grateful for the cool liquid, and sat back against the oversized pillows again, clutching the glass as though it were a life preserver in the maelstrom of her life.

He’d crossed his arms, watching her drink, expressionless. Now, he sat on the end of the bed, and she saw the bruises left from their encounter with the creature during the night marring his otherwise handsome features. Suddenly too anxious to be careful, she set down her glass and got up on her knees to look closer, reaching out her hand to turn his head into the light. No blood had spilled, she saw with relief, and there weren’t any scratches or puncture wounds. Realizing she’d been holding her breath, she exhaled in a rush, before gasping softly when he took her shaking fingers into his own warm palm, and pressed a kiss into her wrist.

“I’m sorry,” she stammered, trying to pull back. “I didn’t mean for you to get hurt. I don’t want anyone else to get hurt.”

He held her cold hand to his face, nuzzling her palm, before gathering her into his lap. “Maybe now would be a good time to explain exactly what is going on,” he murmured into her hair, rocking her gently. She stiffened, shaking her head, but he refused to allow her to pull away. “No, sweetheart, I’m involved now. Maybe I was always meant to be. Don’t you feel the same way? That something fell into place when we met?”

Charlotte bowed her head in acceptance. No matter how she might try to justify, or explain away this unexpected connection, it was there. And she wanted it, wanted it fiercely, which surprised and frightened her. Confused by the intensity of her emotions, comforted by the presence of this man who was prepared to stand by her, no matter what, she couldn’t take it all in at once, and stay calm. She dissolved into tears once more.
